Wardy Wisdom - Why does mindset matter?

Wardy Wisdom - 3.9.24

Hi there, as mentioned in my last newsletter, I'm handing over the reins today to my wife, Beth (that's her in the photo below). Most of you know me for my coaching, but I have to say, Beth is an exceptional coach in her own right. She has a natural ability to listen and draw people out. I hope you enjoy hearing from her today!

Why does mindset matter?

Hello!

I’m so happy to be a guest contributor this week to Simon’s newsletter. Simon’s last few podcasts and emails have touched on mindset, and it’s something I love talking about. As a Certified Life Coach, my passion is seeing people move from feeling stuck to feeling brave. Whether it's in sport, at work, or life in general, most changes start with looking at things in a slightly different way.

Many of you reading this are athletes, and you’re used to facing physical challenges. But ALL of you are people, and we ALL face challenges. These can show up in our personal lives, careers, or relationships. Some challenges are expected, and others take us by surprise. Some of the challenges have outcomes we can control, and other challenges are completely out of our control. But there’s one thing that plays a crucial role in how we navigate any obstacle, and that’s our mindset.

The Power of Mindset

Mindset is more than just a collection of thoughts and beliefs. It’s the lens through which we view the world, and it shapes our reactions, decisions, and ultimately, our outcomes. When facing difficulties, cultivating a positive and resilient mindset can make all the difference between feeling overwhelmed and finding the strength to push through.

Why Mindset Matters

  1. Resilience in Adversity - A strong mindset helps you bounce back from setbacks. Instead of seeing failures as the end of the road, a growth-oriented mindset views them as opportunities to learn and grow. This resilience allows you to keep moving forward, even when the going gets tough.
  2. Focus Amidst Chaos - Challenges often bring uncertainty and confusion. A focused mindset helps you cut through the noise, prioritize what matters, and maintain a clear sense of direction. When you believe in your ability to overcome obstacles, you’re more likely to stay calm and make effective decisions.
  3. Motivation and Persistence - When faced with obstacles, it’s easy to lose motivation. But with a determined mindset, and by reframing challenges as stepping stones rather than roadblocks, you can stay motivated to keep working toward your goals.
  4. Emotional Balance - Difficulties can trigger negative emotions like fear, frustration, or self-doubt. A positive mindset doesn’t deny these feelings, but helps you manage them in a healthy way. By focusing on what you can control and letting go of what you can’t, you maintain emotional balance, which is crucial for your well-being.

Tips for Encouraging a Positive Mindset

  1. Practice Gratitude - Start or end each day by listing a few things you’re grateful for. This simple practice shifts your focus from what’s wrong to what’s right in your life.
  2. Challenge Negative Thoughts - This one can't be emphasized enough! When negative thoughts arise, question their validity. Replace them with more constructive perspectives that empower rather than discourage you. If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, why would you say it to yourself?
  3. Set Small, Achievable Goals - Breaking down larger challenges into smaller tasks makes them more manageable. Celebrate small victories along the way to build momentum.
  4. Surround Yourself with Positivity - Engage with people, content, and environments that uplift and inspire you. A supportive network can reinforce your positive mindset.

Remember, challenges are an inevitable part of life and NOT always in our control. How we approach them IS within our control. By cultivating a positive mindset, we can transform obstacles into opportunities for growth and success.

PODCAST: Dealing with motivation, self doubt and anxiety before big events

When you're getting close to the day of your big event it’s natural to feel some nerves and even a little anxiety. It happens to everyone, even the very top performers. In fact, if you felt no anxiety or nerves at all, that would probably be a bad thing. Josie Perry has some suggestions on how you can conquer these issues.

ARTICLE: It's not just you. Even Olympians have challenges

I hope you were able to enjoy the Paris Olympics as much as I did. Many of the athletes you watched had overcome some big challenges. Like GB Rower Georgie Brayshaw who recovered from a 9 day coma and temporary paralysis after a horse riding accident to rebuild her health and fitness and eventually win a Gold medal in the Women's Quadruple sculls.
